African birthday video: how to get it right without overthinking it

Choosing a team, writing the board, timing the delivery: a practical checklist for ordering an African birthday video that feels personal rather than generic.

Ordering a personalized birthday video should take ten minutes, not an evening. This guide covers the decisions that actually matter — and the ones you can safely stop worrying about.

1. Start with the recipient, not the team

The team is the frame; the person is the picture. Before you browse, write down three things about the birthday person: their sense of humor, the occasion’s tone, and one detail only you would know.

That note becomes your brief. It also makes choosing a team easier, because you are matching a style to a person rather than guessing.

2. Choose a team that matches their taste

Our birthday video collection has eight options. A quick rule of thumb:

3. Write the board first

The chalkboard is the first thing the recipient reads. Keep it under about 60 characters and make the name the biggest idea on the board.

Good boards:

  • “Happy 30th, Amara!”
  • “We love you, Nana.”
  • “Congratulations, Class of 2026!”
  • “Welcome home, Dad.”

Skip inside jokes that need explaining, long quotes, and anything that would embarrass the recipient if their family saw it.

4. Write the spoken phrase for the ear

One or two sentences. Read it out loud. If you stumble, shorten it. The performer will say it to camera, so punctuation matters: short sentences are easier to deliver than long ones with three commas.

A useful template:

“[Name], happy birthday. [One specific thing you love about them]. I hope this year brings you [one wish].”

That is roughly 25–35 words, which fits comfortably in a 45–75 second video.

5. Add pronunciation notes

This is the single most important field in the order form. Write the name phonetically, add the emphasis, and mention if it is often misread. A correctly pronounced name is worth more than a perfect dance routine.

6. Choose the song — or don’t

If you know their favorite song, request it on the product page. If you do not, let the team choose. They know which songs work for a short performance and which ones leave no room for the spoken line.

7. Time it properly

Standard delivery is 1–3 business days after payment. Work backwards from the birthday: order at least a week before if you can, and add the date on the product page. If the date is tight, email us before ordering and we will be honest about whether we can make it.

8. Decide how to deliver it

You will receive a private link and a downloadable file. You can forward the link on the morning of the birthday, schedule an email, or watch it together on a call. A nice way to use it: put the video on a tablet and play it at the party — the reaction is usually the best part.

Checklist

  • Three notes about the recipient
  • Team chosen
  • Board under 60 characters
  • Spoken phrase under 35 words, read aloud once
  • Pronunciation note added
  • Song chosen or delegated
  • Delivery date checked
  • Order placed with a week to spare

What not to worry about

You do not need professional photos, a script, or a speech. You do not need to know how the filming works. You do not need to be good at words. The team has done this before; your job is to give them one honest sentence about a person you love.

Ready when you are

Pick a team, add the name and the message, and we will film it in Africa.

Frequently asked

What is the best African birthday video for a milestone birthday?

For a 30th, 40th, or 50th, choose a team with a slightly more cinematic tone — The Male Lions or The Boxing Team — or Star of Africa for a larger group.

Can I order for a birthday that is only a few days away?

Email us before ordering. We can sometimes prioritize an order, but we will not promise a date we cannot meet.

Can the video be sent directly to the recipient?

Yes. Put their email in the order notes on the product page and we can send it directly, or forward the private link yourself when you are ready. We do not contact the recipient unless you ask us to.
